SPRINGFIELD -- Police and firefighters responded to a city summer camp Wednesday morning for a swimming pool accident involving a 5-year-old boy.

The incident was reported at Camp STAR Angelina on Trafton Road, according to the Springfield Fire Department.

First responders "worked to revive an unresponsive" 5-year-old boy, said fire department spokesman Dennis Leger, aide to Commissioner Joseph Conant. Further information about the boy's condition was not immediately available.

Emergency officials were heard on radio communications coordinating a shutdown of side streets to clear a route from the camp to Baystate Medical Center.

An ambulance with a police escort of roughly a dozen vehicles was seen along East Columbus Avenue shortly after 11:30 a.m.

The city celebrated the opening of the Forest Park camp in 2015. The $1.8 million improvement project included an in-ground, handicap accessible swimming pool.

The camp provides recreational programs for campers ages 3 to 22, most with special needs.

According to the camp's website, "campers will complete a swim test on the first day of camp with the Camp STAR Angelina lifeguards."

The passage continues: "If your camper needs adaptive equipment or assisted swimming devices (personal floatation device, swimmies, life-jacket) please bring to camp at the orientation day or the 1st day your camper attends."

The camp's pool features a "zero-entry" design, meaning it includes a gradually sloped entry point intended to mimic a natural beach. Such a design is a requirement under 2010 revisions to Americans with Disabilities Act standards for newly constructed or altered swimming pools.
