STEAM programs have thrived, reaching all the way down to the elementary school levels, where students learn how to problem solve and build simple machines to aid them in achieving goals, such as rescuing their dinosaur from the zoo. A county school plays host to the only Rube Goldberg competition in the state of Iowa. It is an event where students have to build complex machines that execute various steps in order to ultimately achieve a task. They are asked to demonstrate their knowledge of Archimedes Principal, taught to them in physics and physical science classes, to construct cardboard and duct tape boats that hopefully will carry a two-person team the length of a swimming pool.
