On the market: Homes with an enviable outdoor kitchen

Sooner than you think, the air will heat up and you'll be craving dinner under the stars. Maybe it's time to start thinking about installing something beyond a barbecue out there. In this week's real estate gallery, we look at homes on the market with an enviable outdoor kitchen.

If firing up more than a portable grill is a hot idea to you, here at five tips to make the best of outdoor cooking, courtesy of Robert Hawkins and Char-Broil, which has a modular outdoor kitchen to roll into place.

Outdoor kitchen design tips:

  1. Where is the wind blowing? This might be one of the most overlooked variables in outdoor kitchen designs by both professionals and DIYers. Try to figure out which direction the wind blows, to avoid having your guests move because they are being smoked out. An alternative is an outdoor kitchen vent or hood system to help make the smoke go away.
  2. A good side burner will allow you to stir-fry veggies, make fajitas and cook breakfast outside.
  3. When deciding if you need another fridge for your outdoor kitchen, think about what you'll use it for. If it's to store refreshments, a decorative patio ice cooler makes more sense. If the plan is to use it to store perishable food or side dishes, it is a smart addition.
  4. When designing your outdoor kitchen, the amount of space needed to keep the guests, host and grill master comfortable and happy is critical. Proper placement of appliances will let the grill master have a domain to control.
  5. Take care of the trash: Having built-in containers for trash and recyclables make for a cleaner look and keep standalone trash cans from cluttering up walkways and space inside the kitchen.
