When John Rattray of Ferndale was perusing his bachelor of fine arts degree at Wayne State University and his friends wanted to go out on the weekends, Rattray was more interested in repainting his shared apartment.

Even as a kid, he was always rearranging his room, and something about interior design was in his soul at a young age.

After college, Rattray worked at an antique store in Birmingham, assisting with merchandise display and helping clients. Working with fine furniture and old world charm fed his love of interior design.

“I indirectly entered the design business by working at the antiques store,” Rattray says. “I also went on buying trips to England, which really got me excited about design.” Rattray extended his training by acquiring a special certificate in architectural CAD applications.

In 2010 Rattray joined the Serba Interiors team, based in Birmingham, and worked closely with principal designer and owner Kevin Serba. Rattray worked as a design assistant who coordinated many projects both locally and across the country.

His standout work and aesthetic caught the eye of a colleague who nominated him for the Rising Star award presented by Detroit Homes Magazine.

“In a Rising Star we are looking for someone who has worked in the field of design for less than 10 years, who has design sense ability, and the use of art, scale and color to unify their space,” says Megan Swoyer, editor of Detroit Home Magazine.

Rattray, 32, possessed what they were looking for and was awarded at the 14th Annual Detroit Home Design Awards in March at the Max. M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center.

“Winning this award means a great deal to me. For many years I had watched my colleagues receive this award, and to win this award is a great honor.”

The award is named in honor of Brain Killian, a Birmingham interior designer with a reputation of generosity in who died in a house fire, Swoyer says.

One standout home interior design project Rattray loved working on was the 1914 Arts and Crafts home of friends who also loves antiques. “It was fun for me because I was given an empty space and dreamt up the design,” he says.

As for Rattray, his favorite room in his own home is the dining room. “I have a 500-year-old oak coffer that was my first significant purchase on a trip from England. It has sentimental meaning.”

Each design project ranges in challenges.

“Lighting can be a challenge if you can’t place it where you want because of a beam so this is a challenge from a construction standpoint,” Rattray says. “Also, if you have designed a room around a piece of fabric your client loves or a rug, and then you find out the item has been discontinued and you have to start all over. That is a challenge.”

There are also many rewards that come with hard work clients on projects.

“The positive response when a client is happy,” he says. “It is very emotional, because clients become friends and there is personal gratitude. It is very touching.”

Like clothing fashion, interior design trends change from year to year, Rattray says. “Right now what is popular is retro design light fixtures and furniture, and the retro-vintage look along with punchy colors like oranges and greens,” Rattray says.

If you have a passion for design, Rattray says, “Get out there and do it. Be in it. If you love it and are passionate about it immerse yourself in it. Open up your design book and be inspired.”
