Inside each house is an owner, and that owner has an individual set of preferences and personality traits that spills over into the rooms of the home through colors, textures, scales, finishes and more. Generally, we’re all drawn to certain interior design styles that match our personalities, but sometimes it’s difficult to identify our exact taste. Do you know which design style you might be? Read on to learn more about each look and some common characteristics of each.
Bringing truth to the phrase “everything old is new again,” this look has exploded onto the scene in recent years, causing homeowners to tear down their popcorn textured ceilings to get to the weathered wooden beams underneath. This look invokes a sense of warmth, simplicity and rugged strength. Most recently seen in the rise of reclaimed barn wood, it can be easily paired with a few modern and industrial accents to give balance to all the browns and greys that come with the category.
Characteristics: Warm, neutral colors; natural fibers and wood, wire, shiplap and brick. Think your favorite country cabin but with modern amenities.

Modern or Midcentury Modern
This enduring style came to life in the early 20th century through the 1950s and are characterized by clean lines, a minimalistic aesthetic and even a touch of levity. Midcentury modern is a subset of this era that has become wildly popular in recent years. For people who crave a classic look that stays modern no matter the decade, this bold, fun look is for you.
Characteristics: Furniture that is plastic or raised, blonder woods, white walls with a few statement-making pieces (like a metal clock or pattern), a heavy emphasis on shapes and different textures, like bamboo flooring. Think the offices of Mad Men or The Brady Bunch’s living room.

Though sometimes mixed in with modern, contemporary refers to any style that’s popular at the moment, so it changes from era to era. However, there are some common elements that are generally present, like stark, clean lines and a monochromatic scheme.
Characteristics: Black, white or grey color scheme; clean walls or large, floor-to-ceiling windows, furniture that plays with design and includes curvature. Think of an architect’s home in a science fiction film.

Airy, open spaces and no shortage of natural light are two of the trademarks of this design personality. With “beachy” tones such as beige, blue and grey, a home can appear crisp, clean and larger than it is. Carefree without being clunky, many coastal-inspired rooms also benefit from the addition of natural fabrics and pieces with texture.
Characteristics: Linen fabrics; colors of green, blue and yellow; rattan or bamboo furniture. Think your favorite beach house transported to any city across America.
Known for its utilitarian style, industrial design isn’t fussy. (Photo: Getty Images)
If you appreciate fixtures more for the good they can do, rather than the attention they earn you, industrial may be your style. So how does someone mix the function of sturdy salvage pieces with a softness that says “sit down?” Choose comfy, high-quality sofas or loveseat with clean lines and no-frills features. Then embrace the metal and cement staples for wall and ceiling affairs, such as lighting, shelving, and window dressing.
Characteristics: Wood, metal and cement; no-frills lighting, high ceilings and clean walls. Think your arty friend’s studio.

If bright lights and posh parties are your trademark style, this design category will delight you! Textured or patterned wallpaper that pops and chinoiserie (whimsical Asian motifs) are all signature details that help create the Hollywood appearance. With a bit of vintage and a lot of flair, it’s perhaps the most fun to shop for and can change with your moods. A modest chaise lounge is a perfect look to go with a low-backed sofa; don't forget a few bold throw pillows to complete the theme.
Characteristics: Jewel tones or big pops of color applied to rich materials like velvet or satin; eclectic vintage pieces and curiosities; dazzling finishes like gold. Think Old Hollywood with all the drama that entails.

With a slight nod to last decade's shabby chic trend, this look feels warm and well-loved, all at the same time. A natural patina, worn wooden accents and subtly-distressed surfaces help bring this design category to life. Newer pieces may even have to be treated to help them blend into this setting, which combines light color choices with slight vintage charm, but there are some delightful dining pieces ready to recreate even the most well-loved of memories. Wood floors work best for this signature look, although it’s easy to create more warmth with the addition of a simple sisal rug.
Characteristics: Use of floral and other flower-like, pastel colors; wicker and other “light” materials; built-ins, mudrooms and other nooks and crannies that add to a lived-in, homey feeling. Think your favorite bed and breakfast.
