As part of the initiative, universities and high schools incorporate GlyphEd software as a part of their computer, data science, and information design curriculums. Students use the GlyphIT™ software suite to discover insights into data and explore how multi-dimensional glyph-based visualizations can efficiency and effectiveness gains in insight discovery.
On March 10th and 24th, Case Western Reserve hosted the Cleveland High School Data Science Competition on its Cleveland, Ohio campus. Close to one hundred high school students, their teachers and over thirty professionals from the data science and higher education fields participated in the region’s second annual data science competition.
This ‘Kaggle-like’ experiential learning competition, designed specifically for high school students, exposed students to the world of data science and gave them a hands-on opportunity to interpret and manipulate data with mentorship from professionals in the field.
The second annual competition was sponsored by CoverMyMeds - a leader in the field of patient prescription medication authorization, Case Western Reserve University-boasting one of the regions only undergraduate data science programs, the Cleveland Foundation, and BioEnterprise. The event was launched by the collaborative effort of HIT in the CLE which represents the efforts to grow more talent for the Health IT industry of Northeast Ohio.During the competition, the students used familiar data sets such as video game, sports, and social media data to enhance learning and exploration. Using a variety of data analysis tools, including GlyphEd, the students dove deeply into data sets on the first day of the two-day event. Students then presented their finding on the second day in two rounds of competition.
Teams were judged on 5 specific criteria:
- Computational rigor
- Oral presentation
- Visual presentation
GlyphEd demonstrated their data visualization software to students as a means to both introduce visual analysis of data and help cultivate visual imagination. The data visualization presentation showed students how sophisticated tools can present data in interactive, 3D, renderings that provide a rich experience for viewers when conducting analysis or review.

Since 2016, John Carroll University has used GlyphEd software in its computer science program to explore and understand the benefits of data visualization. Additional universities are using the software in their spring 2018 curriculum.
