Have you ever spent hundreds or thousands of dollars on an area rug only to find yourself feeling disappointed with how it looks or feels? Finding the perfect rug for your room is sort of like finding “the one” and requires some experimentation and exploration.

Do you prefer hand-knotted or machine woven? Are you in the market for the posh look of wool or the durability of jute? Do you desire bold pops of color or a muted tone? There are hundreds of beautiful rugs on the market today, and each one has a story to tell for your home. There are some basic principles designers recommend for maximum effect, so check out these tips to find the right companion for any room in your home.

Know when to be bold

Even those who aren’t comfortable moving past neutral paint palettes or more muted furniture schemes can get brave with their rug selection. Picking a solid bold color or even a striped print can help you add some much-needed dimension to a room that you can quickly undo later – without major consequences. Take a dare with your rug rather than overwhelming the entire room with an experiment you might later regret.

However, there are times when being adventurous won’t pay off. If your room is already bold in its design, color or setup, a similarly distinct rug might take the look over the top. Likewise, if your style is more traditional and won’t lend well to a modern, eye-catching graphic or bright hue, find boldness in other ways by picking lush materials like leather or wool.

Size does matter — so does shape

Though the appearance of a rug certainly plays a part in its impact on your living room, size is an important component that is easy to overlook. If you place a 5x8 rug in a large room, it could have the effect of making your design look anemic – opt for a larger rug. Design trends are leaning towards rugs that cover large swaths of the room – almost to the four corners – because it makes the room look large, rich and comfortable. The shape of your rug also matters. A round rug can be used to add depth to small furniture (like a four-person kitchen dinette) or help round out minimalistic furniture, while a runner is more appropriate to elongate hallways or stairs.

Design for function and style

While people are often attracted to rugs based on texture, color and design, there are other important considerations to make. If you have pets or children, and the rug will get as much wear as a typical carpet, you need also to base your choices on practicality. Darker colors will hide stains, while pre-treating will ward off deep soiling. For high-traffic areas that can't avoid spills and rough treatment, you may opt for a versatile multipurpose patio rug that can be used both indoors and out – and cleaned up with ease.

Add layers

Not sure about choosing just one rug? New décor trends are showing that two can do nicely! Layering rugs takes a bit more work, but the effect can be warm and visually stunning. Use two rugs of varying shapes and textures to be sure that the bottom one can peek out from underneath. Experiment with placement (even switching out which goes on top) until you get a look you’re proud to display.

Pick your rug first

If you’re designing a room from scratch, you’ll get the best outcome by choosing the rug before the rest of your furniture. Since the rug is the piece that can tie everything together, it should be treated as the star of the show. With so many custom furniture pieces available today, you can pick upholstery options for your sofa and loveseat that work together with the rug of your dreams. If you’ve already purchased your furniture, there’s still hope; throw pillows can be used to tie everything together in a way that still keeps the focus on the main attraction.

How often you shop for a new rug depends on what you need, but it also can be about what you want. Area rugs are a risk-free way to reinvent your home, giving you the opportunity to try new trends without the expense – and hassle – of a major remodel. The next time you feel that a fresh coat of paint can help you breathe life into a stale room, consider what a rug may do instead. It’s easy to switch up this versatile accessory for each new season of your home’s life!
