The closures are scheduled to last from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. ALDOT is closing the ramp to set steel beams across the interstate in downtown Birmingham. Cars traveling south on 59/20 will be detoured past the closed ramp to the Arkadelphia Road exit then onto 59/20 north to reach I-65. Message boards will be up along the path of the detour. ALDOT says a reduced speed limit of 45 miles per hour is in effect throughout the work zone. ALDOT is requesting motorists consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs. The interchange between I-59/20 and I-65 through downtown is being redesigned as part of a major roadway project. A construction mishap shut down I-59/20 at that interchange for nearly a week earlier this month after a temporary support failed, causing a steel beam to "shift."
