Sunscape has been building custom homes in affluent communities throughout Central Florida for more than 24 years, under the direction of founder and chief executive Rick Carr. He is a former president of the Master Custom Builder Council in Central Florida and received the trade group's builder of the year award in 2002.
Carr said the company will start work on its first house in Oakland Park -- a four-bedroom Spanish-colonial-style home -- during the second quarter.
Each of the 750 homes planned for the Oakland Park community in west Orange County will have to be certified as "green" according to FGBC standards, meaning that they meet certain criteria for energy efficiency, water thriftiness and environmental sustainability.
For example, the community will not plant the standard St. Augustine landscape grass that is so prevalent in Florida, because of its relatively high irrigation needs. Other types of sod will be used instead.
Parade of Homes
ICI Homes, one of the nation's top 100 home builders and community developers, is putting finishing touches on the 2008 Volusia Home Builders Association's Showcase Home for the Volusia Parade of Homes, which starts Saturday. Rosemary Messina, vice president of sales and marketing at ICI Homes in Daytona Beach, said the Emerald model luxury home at Plantation Bay Golf & Country Club in Ormond Beach has a "GE eco-dashboard" high-tech touch screen to monitor all energy use, calculate costs and savings, and store data for future reference. Messina said the model will boast many energy-saving features, including solar water and solar electric panels. The Emerald model luxury home has a base price of $525,000. ICI Homes is building four other Parade of Homes models at Plantation Bay, Waters Edge in Port Orange, Breakaway Trails, and Chelsea Place in Ormond Beach.
